Book Review: SQL Server 2005 Reporting Services

We have finally migrated from Microsoft SQL Server 2000 to MS SQL Server 2005. This means that we can now take advantage of SQL Server 2005 Reporting Services (SSRS).

I have played with SQL Server 20005 Reporting Services at a previous employers, but nothing in depth; so I needed a resource that would allow me to quickly get up to speed.

After hunting around Amazon.com, the most obvious choice was Microsoft SQL Server 20005 Reporting Services by Brian Larson.

I have been reading the book for a few weeks now and working through the examples. It has been easy to follow and very helpful in getting a firm grasp of what SQL 2005 Reporting Services is capable of.

I only have a couple of complaints that come to mind. First, that some of the chapters are not named clearly; for example: A chapter titled Never Having to Say "I'm Sorry" was about creating templates in Reporting Services. Second, that they did not go into more depth about ad hoc reporting and the Report Manager.

All in all, I would highly recommend this book to anyone who is just starting out with SQL Server 2005 Reporting Services, or even someone who is interested in learning more advanced ways of using it.
